A Family Owned Hobby Shop by a Lifelong Scale Model Enthusiast

From the time I first laid eyes on my cousin’s unfinished 1/32 scale F4U Corsair model kit when I was just a little kid, I was fascinated with scale models.  In those days, I visited my uncle’s house frequently, and I used to sneak into my cousin’s room when he wasn’t home and play with all those cool toys he had in the room.  One day, I saw a rectangular cardboard box on his desk, and it was a Monogram 1/32 scale F4U Corsair model kit.  I was so completely intrigued by the beautiful artwork on the box that I had to open it to see what was inside.   At that time, he had just finished gluing together the Pratt & Whitney radial engine and the signature gull wing, and I thought it was the coolest thing I ever saw.  I was burning with curiousity about what the finished model would look like that I went back to check out his model kit every time I visited.  To my great disappointment, my cousin had stopped making any progress on his model kit, and my curiosity builds.  On one visit, I decided to take matters into my own hands and try to help him finish the project.  I ended up ruining his Corsair model because I didn’t know what I was doing, and he was mad at me for months afterwards.  That was my first introduction to scale modeling.

I started my own first scale model project when I was about ten years old.  It was a 1/72 scale North American F-5 jet fighter, which I was required to build for my third-grade craft class. My only other scale modeling experience being my cousin’s ill-fated Corsair kit, I didn't really knew what I was doing.  I simply glued my kit together without painting it and slap the decals on it.  Needless to say, my finished F-5 model wasn’t quite up to par. I looked on with amazement at the beautifully painted and finished models of my classmates, and I was inspired to learn how to build one as good as theirs.  However, months passed by, and I gave less and less thought to the gray color F-5 which sat on my desk collecting dust. Then a little hobby shop opened up near my home, and it quickly became my favorite place to hang out after school.  Against the big shop window was a large well lit clear glass display case, and inside were rows and rows of beautifully finished model tanks, airplanes, cars, motorcycles, soldiers, and ships.  The owner of the shop was a friendly middle aged fellow who always sat behind a workbench in the corner working on model kits.  I spent hours watching him carefully sanding, painting, and gluing each part to form miniatures so real that they seemed to be alive.  It was then I decided to spend some of my allowance on model kits.  Three decades later, I’m still putting together scale models.

Those hours spent in that little neighborhood hobby shop helped me developed a lifelong passion for building scale models, and with each completed project, I learned things like patience, perseverance, attention to detail, and workmanship.  I’ve been told by friends and family that I put together some beautifully finished models, but pitted against some amazingly detailed models I’ve seen on 'Fine Scale Modeling', my stuff still got ways to go.  Well, I’ll keep trying until I get there.  I build mostly World War II combat aircraft models these days, and I'm amazed how model building had enhanced my imagination.  As I was completing my most recent project, an 1/48 scale Grumman F4F Wildcat, I thought about the heroic young Marine Corps Second Lieutenant Jefferson De Blanc over the Solomons in 1943.  I imagine seeing him sitting in the miniature cockpit as I put the finishing touches on the canopy piece, and imagining him carefully maneuvering my Cactus Air Force Wildcat behind a Japanese Oscar from six-o’clock low...  Scale modeling has brought me a lot of enjoyment, and I created Aaron's Hobbies so I can share this wonderful hobby with others.
