3Smaller than I thoughtSep 16, 2011
By P. Layne
I bought this as a gift for someone and although it said 1-700 I still didn't imagine that it would be as tiny as it was. The person I gave it to seemed to like it but hard to really tell as they could be just being polite.

4Tamiya's USS Fletcher DD445May 27, 2008
By James Ware "crabby geezer"
Between 1942-44 the US navy comissioned 175 Fletcher class destroyers. The Fletcher and her many sisters became the prototype for modern destroyers of the US fleet. The Sumner and Gearing classes that followed the Fletchers were improvements on the highly successful design.

The Fletcher class destroyers were armed with 5 X 5" guns, 6-10 X 40mm AA guns, 7-10 X 20mm AA guns, 10 X 21" torpedo tubes, and depth charges. Fully loaded she weighed in at 2400 tons and could make a blistering 36 knots.

The Fletchers were a remarkably well rounded destroyer. They excelled at any mission mission they were asked to perform. They were excellent sub hunters, surface combatants and packed a powerful anti-aircraft punch. Most of the Fletchers were equipped with radar.

Of the 175 built, only 17 were lost to enemy action during WWII. Most were sold or scrapped in the fifties and sixties. Many were sold to foreign navies where the last one was decommissioned in 2003. Four are preserved as museums and another one is planned to be added in 2010.

The USS Fletcher served in WWII from late in 1942 until the very end of the war winning 15 battle stars. She won an additional 5 battle stars for her service in the Korean conflict. In 1949 Fletcher was refit and reclassified as a destroyer escort with a specialization on anti-submarine warfare. She served with the Pacific fleet in that capacity until 1969 when she was decommissioned and scrapped in 1972.

_____________

Tamiya's 1/700 scale ships are the best available. Their casts and molds are far superior to their competitors. 1/700 is a challenging scale and is probably not a good fit for raw beginners.
